| The
Miami Heat came into the NBA for the 1988-89 season as part of
a two-phase league expansion. The Miami Heat struggled through
most of the beginning seasons. Finally, in 1992 the Heat made
it to the playoffs, and it was the first of the four 1980s expansion
teams to reach the postseason. Although they were beaten by the
notorious Michael Jordan and The Chicago Bulls, making it to the
playoffs definitely encouraged the team. The next season the Heat
posted its best record ever, sneaking into the playoffs as the
No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Heat won Game 1(the
first playoff win in franchise history) and Game 3 before the
Hawks rallied to win the final two contests and take the series.
In 1995 the Heat hired Pat Riley as the team's president and head
coach. With Riley as their new leader the team underwent numerous
changes. The biggest being the aquistion of Center Alonzo Mourning.
In 2002, Mourning was diagnosed with a rare kidney ailment and
has been unable to play. As a result, the Heat have become bottom-feeders
in the NBA hierarchy. Miami fans hope that the return of Alonzo
Mourning coupled with rookie Caron Butler can bring them back
to the top of the Eastern Conference. |
