The
Orlando Magic joined the NBA for the 1989-90 season. The franchise
only had a brief period of adjustment before establishing itself
as a contender. After the 1992 Draft Orlando selected center Shaquille
O'Neal and he became the first rookie since Buck Williams to score
1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in one season. After the Magic
gained Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, in a draft day trade for Chris
Webber, they became instantly competitive, and one of the league's
most popular teams. Orlando then began to rise above the ranks of
other expansion teams. In only their sixth season in the league,
the Orlando Magic posted the best record in the Eastern Conference,
won the Atlantic Division, defeated the Boston Celtics, the Chicago
Bulls, and the Indiana Pacers in the playoffs; losing in the final
round in no way diminished the accomplishments of the young squad.
After loosing Shaquille O'Neal to the Lakers, the signing of Tracy
McGrady and Grant Hill were supposed to return the team to the Magic
of the glory days. But Hill has been unable to play a full season
due to chronic ankle problems. But Coach “Doc” Rivers has the team
playing excellent basketball. |
