The
Dallas Mavericks joined the NBA in the 1980-81 season. With some
premium draft selections the team steadily improved through the
1980s and Dallas began to look like a team of the future; the league
was beginning to view the Mavericks not as an expansion team but
as a dangerous opponent. The Mavericks found themselves in the Western
Conference Finals for the first time in team history, but the Mavericks
struggled with the Los Angeles Lakers. After the glory came the
gloom, as the next year was the first time the Mavericks finished
out of the playoffs since 1982 and the Mavericks experienced one
of the most precipitous declines in NBA history. The team's descent
was so complete that it twice threatened the worst single-season
record ever recorded. But with a solid core of young, talented players,
the Mavericks have climbed their way back up the NBA ladder. With
a lineup featuring Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Michael Finley, Raef
Laftrentz, and Nick Van Exel, the Mavericks have positioned themselves
as one of the elite teams in the NBA. |
