The
Pistons were christened the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons in 1941 named
after its creator, Fred Zollner. Following the 1949 playoffs the NBL
and BAA merged to form the National Basketball Association and the
Pistons were placed in the Central Division. The team struggled for
many seasons to come. Until, in 1986 they became known as “The Bad
Boys” due to their tough defensive playing and physical offense, due
in large part to Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. Their 63 wins in the
1988-89 season were a franchise best and that season the Pistons moved
into a new home-the Palace of Auburn Hills. When Grant Hill joined
the cast, he was better then expected and the Pistons made it to the
postseason for the second straight season. The Pistons were finally
part of NBA's elite. Dumars has now taken over in the front office
and is remaking the team in mold of “The Bad Boys”. The acquisitions
of Ben Wallace, the reigning defensive player of the year, Chauncy
Billups and Richard Hamilton have put the Pistons back in position
to be a force in the NBA.
