After a disappointing 2008 season (compiling the worst record in league history 0-16), the Detroit Lions made some notable changes to the staff. Rod Marinelli was fired and was replaced by Jim Schwartz as Head Coach. Tom Lewand was promoted to Team President. Martin Mayhew was promoted to General Manager, and Jim Colletto was re-assigned to offensive line coach. The Lion lost Joe Barry (defensive coordinator), Mike Barry (assistant offensive line), Jimmy Lake (secondary), Joe Cullen (defensive line), and Dave Boller (assistant director of pro personnel). Gunther Cunningham was hired as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, and Scott Linehan was hired as offensive coordinator. Some notable roster losses include Leigh Bodden, Dan Campbell, Jon Dunn, Mike Furrey, Edwin Mulitalo, Dwight Smith, Dan Orlovsky, Jon Kitna (traded for Anthony Henry), and Cory Redding (traded for Julian Peterson).
