Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929. They joined the NFL in 1930 and moved to Detroit for the 1934 season, thus becoming the Detroit Lions. The current owner is William Clay Ford, Sr., the general manager is Matt Millen, and the team is led by head coach Rod Marinelli. The Lions play their home games at Ford Field. The Lions have lost running back Kevin Jones and Kalimba Edwards, defensive end. These Hall of Famers were previous team members: Lem Barney (1992), Lou Creekmur (1996), Jack Christiansen (1970), Dutch Clark (1963), Bill Dudley (1966), Frank Gatski (1985), John Henry Johnson (1987), Dick Lane (1974), Yale Lary (1979), Bobby Layne (1967), Barry Sanders (2004), Charlie Sanders (2007), Joe Schmidt (1973), Doak Walker (1986), and Alex Wojciechowicz (1968).
