In another move brought on by the NHL lockout, the National Hockey League has announced that the 2005 NHL All-Star Game, scheduled for Feb. 13 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., has been cancelled.

The Atlanta Thrashers and the city will host the 2005 NHL All-Star Game, marking the third All-Star event held in Atlanta since the city hosted the NBA in 2003 and Major League Baseball in 2000. Add the Super Bowl in 2000, and the city will have hosted a showcase event in each of the four major pro sports.

This will be the first time the hockey All-Star Game has come to Atlanta.

The event will be here next February. The Thrashers, in their fifth season, hope to make their first-ever playoffs this year.

Though the National Hockey League will not confirm the 2005 All-Star Game is coming to Atlanta, Philips Arena and Thrashers officials are already planning for the event. They recently moved the 2005 SEC women's basketball championship from Atlanta to Greenville, S.C., to make room at Philips.

An NHL official said Atlanta is one of eight finalists to host the All-Star Game in either 2005 or 2006. He said NHL officials will make a formal announcement on the 2005 All-Star Game within the next couple of weeks.

Frank Supovitz, group vice president for events and entertainment for the NHL, said that hockey officials have been to Atlanta several times to assess the city's facilities, hotels, transportation and other infrastructure.

"All of it looks very, very positive for Atlanta, and Atlanta is a big events city and is built for those types of things," Supovitz said. "It would be a great opportunity for the city [to host an All-Star Game], and would spread the gospel of the game."

A Thrashers spokesperson acknowledged the team had expressed interest in hosting an All-Star Game, though the spokesperson said there was "nothing to confirm at this point."

Gary Stokan, president of the Atlanta Sports Council, also said there was nothing to comment on related to the NHL right now, but he did say that the city's pro sports teams are "always looking at mega sporting events when they come up."
