| When NASCAR president Bill France Jr. and Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George announced in February 1993 that NASCAR would be racing at Indianapolis, it sent shockwaves through the auto racing community. Many feared the tradition and integrity of the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be compromised. But the enormous popularity of NASCAR racing fueled the sales of Brickyard 400 tickets. The "Brickyard 400" name is derived from Indianapolis Motor Speedway's nickname. The Speedway has been known as the "Brickyard" since 1909, when the surface of the 2 1/2-mile oval track consisted of 3.2 million bricks. A single strip of bricks, called the "yard of bricks," remains at the track's start/finish line. | |||||||||
