The 2008 season will be an interesting one for the Washington Redskins. Joe Gibbs resigned after the 2007 season, even though he still had a year left on his contract. The Reskins faced some challenges last season, with the death of teammate Sean Taylor. They started off the season not in great shape, but really got going toward the end, even earning a playoff spot. Jim Zorn was named the new coach on February 9th, 2008 and he signed a five year contract. The Redskins made some other changes to prepare for the upcoming season. Associate Head Coach Al Saunders and Assistant Head Coach Gregg Williams were fired. Greg Blanche was named defensive coordinator, and Sherman Smith was hired as offensive coordinator. According to Forbes Magazine, the Washington Redskins are the second most valuable franchise in the NFL, valued at roughly $1.467 billion. They have also broken the NFL's mark for single season attendance 6 years in a row. The Redskins have won 5 championships, and 3 Super Bowls. 4 of 5 Super Bowls were under the aforementioned Joe Gibbs, who will be sorely missed this season. Another interesting fact is that the Redskins are one of only two NFL teams with an official marching band, the other team being the Baltimore Ravens.
Originally based in Boston in 1932, they were known as the Braves, changing their name to the Boston Redskins in 1933, and finally, after moving to DC in 1937, became the Washington Redksins.
