The last time fans attended an NFL regular-season game in Las Vegas…

Well, actually, check that. There has never been an NFL regular-season game in Las Vegas with fans. That will change in September 2021 as the Las Vegas Raiders kick off their second season at Allegiant Stadium, the first season with spectators allowed in the venue.

The Raiders are hoping this new chapter of franchise history will come with improved performance on the field. The team has only qualified for the postseason once since 2002, the year the Raiders advanced to Super Bowl XXXVII before losing to former coach Jon Gruden. Once Gruden came back for his second stint as Raiders head coach in 2018, fans of the Silver and Black were hoping (or expecting) that playoff trips would once again become a regular occurrence.

So far, though, improvement has been slow and difficult to come by. Gruden’s last three seasons at the helm have resulted in 4 wins, 7 wins, and 8 wins, respectively. Pressure is mounting in the desert for Gruden’s ballclub to have a breakthrough season as the team chases its first playoff berth since 2016.

Derek Carr is back at quarterback for Las Vegas after posting his third consecutive 4,000-yard passing season in 2020. The eighth-year veteran has been a model of consistency, starting 110 of the team’s 112 games since coming into the league. However, he and the Raiders only have a single winning season to show for that tenure.

Top rusher Josh Jacobs and leading receiver Darren Waller both earned Pro Bowl honors a year ago after putting up 1,000-yard seasons, so scoring shouldn’t be a problem. The Raiders will be hoping for better defensive production, however, after allowing more points than every team in the league except Detroit and Jacksonville.

The Raiders kick off the 2021 season with a home game against Baltimore on Monday, September 13, as the team gets a national-TV spotlight for its long-awaited debut in front of the Las Vegas fans. The first AFC West game won’t come until October, when Las Vegas visits the Chargers in a Week 4 Monday Night Football showdown.

To win the division, the Raiders will have to dethrone the five-time champion Chiefs, so both meetings against Kansas City will be pivotal. November 14 is a Sunday night game at Allegiant Stadium, with the Raiders going to K.C. on December 12.

Gruden's team also gets a Thanksgiving game in 2021, as the Raiders visit Dallas in Week 12. The regular season concludes on January 9 with a home date against the Chargers.
