The International Champions Cup (ICC) is the world’s premier annual summer soccer tournament featuring the top international clubs playing across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Launched in 2013, the ICC transformed ordinary soccer friendlies into tournament play. Where once it was customary for the top European football clubs to tour different geographical regions of the world playing traditional preseason fixtures, the ICC turned those exhibition matches into an exciting competition with championship stakes.
The competition format has changed through the years to accommodate more clubs and more regions. The International Champions Cup has grown from an inaugural eight-club tournament held in the United States into a true worldwide event. The tournament play in 2015 featured three-team editions in Australia and China for the first time in addition to the separate ten-club edition held across 11 North American and European cities.
By 2018, 18 clubs were participating, each playing three matches across 15 venues in the U.S., Europe, and Singapore as part of a single table. The tournament champion Tottenham Hotspur was determined by most total points.
Twelve top clubs representing six countries participated in the 2019 ICC edition, again organized into a single table, with matches conducted across 17 cities in the U.S., Europe, Singapore, and China. Benfica, representing Portugal's Primeira Liga, took home the trophy as the 2019 International Champions Cup winner.
Attendance and interest for the International Champions Cup have steadily risen since 2013, now reaching a global audience of 80 million fans throughout 150 countries. Notable tournament signatures include the 109,318 fans who packed Michigan Stadium to watch Manchester United defeat Real Madrid in 2014, setting the all-time attendance record for a soccer match in the U.S.
In 2017, the fiercest rivals in the sport, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, collided for another chapter of El Clásico, only the second time “The Classic” has been played outside of Spain. Real Madrid is the most successful club in International Champions Cup history, having won three titles.
The ICC portfolio also includes the Women’s International Champions Cup and International Champions Cup Futures.
