LaLiga has been the top-tier division of Spain’s football system for 92 years. This Spanish Primera División is comprised of the country’s 20 best clubs every year. Notable clubs include Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, two of the most followed and most valuable sports teams in the world, as well as most fierce competitors on the pitch. Any match these rivals play is known as El Clásico (The Classic).
Similar to other football systems around the world, Spain uses a process of promotion and relegation, where the clubs occupying the bottom three positions of the LaLiga table are relegated to the Segunda División, and three clubs in the Segunda División are promoted to LaLiga. In total, 62 clubs have competed in LaLiga since its inception, with nine clubs winning the championship.
Real Madrid possesses the most league championships with 34 titles, followed by Barcelona and its 26 titles. National cups include the Supercopa de España (Spanish Super Cup) and the Copa del Rey, a knockout tournament where the winner qualifies for the UEFA Europa Cup. The top four teams in LaLiga automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious club football tournament in the world.
LaLiga has dominated European football in recent years. Its clubs have won more Champions League titles (18) than any other European league, and its players have more Ballon d’Or awards (23) than any other league. Six-time winner Lionel Messi is the top goal scorer (467 goals) in LaLiga history while competing for Barcelona.
