The Florida Gators are chasing their first-ever berth in the College Football Playoff.
Is this the year Dan Mullen gets them there?
Mullen took over a proud program in 2018 that was coming off only its second losing season since 1979, and has quickly returned the Gators to relevance in the SEC. In his first three seasons at the helm, Mullen’s UF teams are 29-9, with trips to the Peach, Orange, and Cotton Bowls to their credit.
But for a fan base that fondly remembers national champion coaches like Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer in Florida’s not-so-distant history, it seems like time to take the next step and qualify for college football’s final four. Losing talented offensive players like Kyle Pitts, Kadarius Toney, and Kyle Trask to the NFL won’t help, but the cupboard is never bare in Gainesville.
The Gators get their promising 2021 campaign started with a September 4 home game against Florida Atlantic before traveling to play USF in Week 2. September 18 brings one of the biggest games of the season, as preseason No. 1 Alabama visits Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for a marquee showdown on CBS (and a rematch of last year’s SEC title game).
Other highlights of the schedule include an October 16 trip to LSU, a clash with perennial powerhouse Georgia in Jacksonville October 30, and the season-ending non-conference rivalry game vs. Florida State (at the Swamp on November 27). Should the Gators manage to return to the SEC Championship Game, that will be played December 4 in Atlanta.
