Additional Houston Texans Info

David Culley became the oldest first-time head coach in NFL history this year, hired to lead the Houston Texans at age 65.

He has his work cut out for him, to put it mildly.

Franchise cornerstone J.J. Watt (over 100 career sacks) is gone, signing a contract with the Cardinals after a decade in Houston.

Star quarterback Deshaun Watson (4,800+ passing yards and 33/7 TD:INT ratio last season) is shelved indefinitely as the legal process runs its course related to a number of suits and complaints against him.

And after six playoff appearances in nine years, Houston limped to a 4-12 season in 2020 that cost predecessor Bill O’Brien his job.

So if the Texans can’t win WITH Watt and Watson, how are they supposed to improve without them?

For now, Houston will hand the QB reins to journeyman Tyrod Taylor. Over his first 10 years in the league, Taylor has won more games under center than he’s lost, albeit in a small sample size (47 career starts). Veteran running back Mark Ingram II and former Pro Bowler Philip Lindsay are new faces in the Texans backfield and should combine with leading returning rusher David Johnson to provide a nice boost to an attack that averaged just 92 yards a game. Wideout Brandin Cooks is another name to keep an eye on; he put up his fifth career 1,000-yard season in 2020, his first year with the team.

The Houston defense ranked near the bottom of the league a year ago, allowing over 400 yards per game. Free agent acquisitions like Kevin Pierre-Louis, Terrance Mitchell, Jordan Jenkins, and Christian Kirksey (all potential starters) are expected to help that unit immediately.

The Texans kick off the 2021 season at NRG Stadium against Jacksonville and No. 1 overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence. Two of Houston’s four wins last season came against the Jaguars, so that’s an important opener for a Texans team that lost its first four outings in 2020.

The first three road games of the year will provide stiff tests, as the Texans visit a trio of teams that made the AFC playoffs last season: Cleveland in Week 2, Buffalo in Week 4, and Indianapolis in Week 6.

Other notable games on the schedule include a nationally-televised date with Carolina for Thursday Night Football on September 23. Houston finishes the regular season on January 9 with a home game against divisional foe Tennessee.
