The Matthew Stafford era in Los Angeles is underway.
Although starting quarterback Jared Goff led the Rams to the playoffs in three of the last four seasons after a 12-year postseason drought, L.A. still dealt Goff to Detroit this winter to acquire Stafford. The veteran signal-caller, who has thrown for more than 45,000 yards in his NFL career, will try to lead the Rams to their first Super Bowl trophy of the millennium.
Stafford is 16th on the league’s all-time list with 282 touchdown passes, and Rams coach Sean McVay is hoping the ex-Lion has many more scoring strikes in store this fall. A wide receiver corps once again led by Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods should continue to give defensive coordinators fits, and the additions of DeSean Jackson (via free agency) and Tutu Atwell (second-round pick out of Louisville) will give Stafford an abundance of talented targets to choose from.
Speaking of defense, the Rams’ unit on that side of the ball was elite a year ago. With perennial Pro Bowler Aaron Donald on the defensive line and All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey shutting down the opponent’s top receivers week in and week out, Los Angeles allowed less points than any other team in the league (296 total) en route to a second-place finish in the NFC West and a wild card berth. L.A. went on to upset the Seahawks in the NFC playoffs before falling to the Packers in the divisional round.
The Rams begin their 2021 season with a nationally televised Sunday night game on September 12 as the Chicago Bears come to town. Three of L.A.’s first four games will be played at SoFi Stadium, including a Week 3 showdown with reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay.
One of the most notable games on Los Angeles’ 2021 schedule is an October 24 home date with Detroit, as Stafford and Goff get a chance to prove on the field which team got the better end of the ballclubs’ offseason blockbuster trade. On November 28, L.A. once again visits Lambeau Field looking for revenge against Green Bay and 2020 MVP Aaron Rodgers. Other highlights of the schedule include appearances on Thursday Night Football (October 7 at Seattle), Monday Night Football (twice, with a November 15 trip to San Francisco and a December 13 visit to Arizona), and a Sunday night home game against Tennessee on November 7.
