The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most celebrated and successful teams in the National Football League. Established in 1933 by the Rooney family who continues to own the team to this day, the Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC and have produced an unparalleled tradition of excellence that includes six Super Bowl championships since the NFL merger in 1970 – tied with the New England Patriots for most in NFL history.
In addition to the six Super Bowl trophies, the Pittsburgh Steelers boast a record that includes a remarkable 32 playoff appearances, eight AFC championships, and 24 division titles. Their first Super Bowl victory (Super Bowl IX) initiated one of the most dominant runs ever in professional sports, in which the Steelers earned the moniker “team of the decade” in the 1970s, winning seven division titles, four conference championships, and four Super Bowls – the only team to ever win back-to-back Super Bowls twice.
The Steelers, who play their home games at Heinz Field, remain a perennial championship contender. Competing today in the AFC North Division, Steeler games against the division rival Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals are among the most intense and passionate in the NFL every season.
The team’s fanbase, known as Steeler Nation, stretches from coast to coast and is one of the most fervent and loyal in the NFL. It’s easy to spot a Steelers fan, as they are sure to be waving the team’s notable Terrible Towel, one of the most recognized fan symbols in sports.
Steelers fans have had plenty of winning teams to cheer on and an all-time roster that’s loaded with 25 Hall of Fame players, coaches, and executives. The Steelers are also the only NFL franchise with three generations of ownership enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Led by veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers will look to defend their 2020 AFC North title this fall, with the action kicking off September 12 at Buffalo. Other notable dates on the calendar include the home opener September 19 vs. Las Vegas, a pair of Monday Night Football appearances (November 8 against Chicago and January 3 vs. Cleveland), two Sunday night games (October 17 vs. Seattle and November 21 at the L.A. Chargers), and a Thursday night trip to Minnesota December 9.
